The Brain is a communications center of billions of neurons. Networks of neurons pass messages back and forth to different structures within the brain. These nerve networks coordinate and regulate everything we feel, think, and do. Drugs are chemicals. They work in the brain by tapping into the brain's communication system and interfering with the way nerve cells normally send, receive, and process information. Some drugs, such as marijuana and heroin, can act like neurons because they mimic the natural neurotransmitters. Drugs like cocaine and Meth Amphetamine release large amounts of Natural neurons to prevent normal cycling of brain chemicals.

in the picture to the left it shows how a drug addicts brain is affected by drugs by comparing a healthy brain to a drug abusers brain. The highlighted yellow are the neurons communicating and sending messages through out the brain, on the drug abusers brain there are less neurons than the healthy brain. Why is that you may wonder? This is because the chemicals released by the drugs confuse the brain into thinking that they are neurons which leads to the brain not needing the normal amount of neurons that a healthy brain needs.
